Limud - Gate of Study
Study is a powerful way to access the riches of our tradition. It can take place in a variety of settings and ways. Whether in preparing or listening to a Dvar Torah (word of Torah) or study session, on a hike or while sharing a holiday meal, Jewish learning should be experienced in a manner that challenges the intellect and rouses the soul. Some texts and ideas are approached easily, while other require reflection. Some even demand debate. Sha'ar welcomes all questions. It is better to wrestle with our tradition than to ignore it or remain indifferent
Sha'ar offers several opportunities to explore our tradition:
- Evening study sessions
- Shabbat afternoon Torah study and Havdalah service
- Torah leyning and haftarah chanting for beginners
- Morning study sessions
- Siddur based Hebrew reading classes
In addition, Rabbi Lewittes teaches classes at various local organizations such as the JCC on the Palisades.

Self, Identity and Consciousness in the book of Genesis:
The Commentary of Dr. Aviva Gottlieb Zornberg
One of the most unique features of Judaism is its invitation to us, indeed our obligation, to engage in life-long dialogue with our sacred texts and traditions. Wresting with the text by exploring the questions it raises about faith, doubt, loyalty, love, holiness, community, identity and morality is a hallmark of Jewish piety for leaders and lay people alike. Beginning within the Bible itself and continuing throughout the millennia, rabbinic, scholarly and spiritual commentary has rendered the Torah a living text, assuring its timeless wisdom and eternal relevance in our lives.
Adding her voice to generations of master teachers and scholars of Torah, Aviva Gottlieb Zornberg plumbs the deepest layers of biblical narratives for their insights into human nature and consciousness. Combining literary analysis with psychoanalytic thought as well as rabbinic and Hassidic teachings, Zornberg uncovers the richness of our stories as they describe the interplay between self, family, community and God and provide us with guidance as we wrestle with our own complex lives and relationships -- human and divine.
Join us for 9 monthly sessions to explore the unique and powerful commentary of Aviva Gottlieb Zornberg on selected stories from the book of Genesis and from the lives of Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Isaac, Ishmael, Rebekah, Jacob and Esau, Rachel, Leah and Joseph.
